I did some research on the artist, Lawrence Wilbur and found out that he studied under N.C Wyeth, another artist who produced Coca-Cola images. It may be hard to tell that some of the brush strokes are thick but you can see the colors are very vivid. I wonder if that little girl is asking to pet the horse or for a sip of the Coca-Cola?

Just for some flavor, I found the original Dell announcement for cloud hardware solutions in a video from March 27, 2007. (Please visit the site to view this…

1 Feb 2012 | 4:51 pmIntel partnered with PopTent Media to bring three Los Angeles-based film-makers to CES this year with one challenge in mind: capture and film a unique story about the benefits of Ultrabook devices. They were armed only with background on Ultrabook devices and an ASUS UX31 Ultrabook. Then they were given 5 days to independently develop their own videos, and they all delivered in bringing new ideas, thinking and perspectives to the table. Anthony Bui – a writer and director that specializes in commercials, music videos, narrative — took an approach to bring the viewer into his… -
Tell Intel How Shopping Should Be Smarter
27 Jan 2012 | 7:50 pmI’m sure we’ve all heard the expression: “a have 2 ears and 1 mouth because we should listen twice as much as we speak.” While that sounds good in concept, it is sometimes hard to do, especially when writing a blog, but that is what I would like to try to do today. The topic du Jour is: Smart Shopping. Specifically, using things like interactive kiosks, cameras, touch screens, and even gesture recognition to improve your shopping experience. And like any good toolbox, the more of the aforementioned tools we use, the more impressive the final solution could be. Let me… -
President Obama Visits Intel: Fabulous Time at Fab 42
26 Jan 2012 | 7:21 amI’m checking this one off the bucket list, the opportunity to see a President speak live. The President spoke at the Intel Ocotillo campus and touted Intel as a leader of innovation, the future of manufacturing and supporter of education Obama It was amazing to watch and witness the day unfolded. I was there early around noon. First the magnitude of security and local support from the police department and fire station, the community came together to provide a beautiful and safe backdrop to President Obama’s visit. Secret Service men and women…

Mashed Black Beans
13 Jan 2012 | 2:07 pmThese are just great. Try them over Mexican Rice. Of course, making your own black beans is cheaper but using beans like Eden Organic No Salt Added beans is quick and easy. These beans only have 15 mg of sodium per serving (1/2 cup). A whole can of 3.5 servings has about 50 mg. Black beans also provide a lot of fiber and you know we all need more fiber. Cost? Reasonable, particularly in bulk but still cheaper to make your own. Remembering Mark Bittman’s article in the NY Times — about $28 to feed a family of four at a major fast food chain and $9 to feed a family of four with… -
Mexican Brown Rice (or any kind of rice)
12 Jan 2012 | 6:28 pmCooking rice has been a journey for me unlike probably billions of people around the world. I really like this new way I tried (new to me). The pureed onion and garlic suffuse the rice with flavor as opposed to just being chunks in in the rice. You can adjust the amounts to your taste. And cooking it with parsley and a whole jalapeno provides pklenty of flavor and spice. This was great with some mashed black beans (recipe to follow another day). Mexican Brown Rice Serves four 1/2 white onion, chunked. (you could use, I suppose, yellow onion, red onion, or shallots) 1-4 cloves garlic 4 cups… -
Vegetables with Scrambled Eggs
30 Dec 2011 | 12:06 pmUltimately it’s ratios that matter. Plates past often featured a huge slab of something done medium rare, a little something white and mashed and maybe a touch of green. While tasty, this kind of meal may not be the best combination of food for long term health. Today’s plates often have a 3 ounce portion of the meat, chicken, or fish (some say about the size of a deck of cards) and lots of vegetables and whole grains of many colors. Same with scrambled eggs. Adding vegetables used to mean adding a sprinkling of freshly snipped chives. I’ve found that a weekend breakfast can… -
Happy Thanksgiving
22 Nov 2011 | 5:26 pmMark Bittman captured the spirit of the season so well in his recent article in the Sunday NYT. I believe we all have people in our lives that make the world a better place. Saeng Sivanthong has created beauty on my hospital campus as a landscaper for many, many years. Eddie Daniels welcomes patients as a receptionist in our Spine Surgery offices with the best smile ever. Selene Corona treats every women she helps as a medical assistant in our OB-GYN offices with respect and caring. Kalu Afu has been making salads with care for our hospitalized patients’ meals for over 30 years. I am… -
Potato, Delicata Squash, and Arugula Salad (Entree)
19 Nov 2011 | 9:00 pmThis dish was just great for a meatless Monday. It is definitely robust enough to serve as a main course. I don’t know if the potatoes have to be exactly those described, but if you can find some small, skinny ones, that is probably best. The delicata squash is delicate (duh) and doesn’t need to be peeled. I think using this squash matters for the texture of this recipe. The amounts of ingredients listed can be varied. Potato, Delicata Squash and Arugula Salad Serves four 1 1/2 pound Russian fingerling potatoes, cut lengthwise into 1/8″ slices 2 delicata squash, halved…

Do You Love Love Contracts?
8 Feb 2012 | 4:13 amValentine’s Day is next week. That means that there are probably lots of new workplace romances just about to burst out all over your office. What do you do? Ever consider a “love contract”? What Exactly Is a Love Contract? To protect itself from liability, an employer requires romantically intertwined employees to sign an agreement stating that (1) the relationship is 100% welcome, voluntary and consensual and (2) they will fully comply with the employer’s anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies, including immediately reporting any and all harassment, avoiding… -
Is Facebook Bad For You?
7 Feb 2012 | 11:40 amAccording to a trio of new studies, Facebook can hurt your (and your employees’) mental health. 355 Friends = Too Many? One study found that when you get a new Facebook “friend,” you get happy. But as you collect more and more friends and start to compare your life with the lives depicted (and often distorted) on their Facebook pages, you feel like a loser. So, what’s the magic number of Facebook friends? 354, according to the study. Facebooking = Depressed Dudes? Another study found a link between time spent on Facebook and depressive symptoms, especially in young… -

Social Media In One Word
6 Feb 2012 | 4:22 amDuring our last webinar, we wanted to see how you really feel about social media. So, we asked our 3,423 attendees to text us the answer to the following question: What ONE word would you use to describe social media in today’s workplace? We received a total of 123 different answers expressing wildly divergent opinions about SM. Some love it. Some hate it. Very few are in-between. The most frequent response — “necessary” — shows just how quickly SM has become indispensable to many in the workplace. However, the fact that three of the top five answers were…

Treating Uterine Fibroids
27 Jan 2012 | 2:20 pmJournalists: For links to web-video files, see the bottom of this post. Uterine fibroids affect one out of every four women. They are a major cause of problems for reproductive age women and a major reason women need to have hysterectomies. Treatment options are limited and ultimately, surgeries are still the dominate treatment for this disease. But more options may be just around the corner. In the Feb. 2, 2010, issue of New England Journal of Medicine, Ebbie Stewart, M.D., Mayo Clinic obstetrician, provides an editorial about a possible new medical treatment for uterine fibroids… -
What’s the Association Between ADHD and Anesthesia?
26 Jan 2012 | 11:45 amJournalists: For links to video and audio files, see the bottom of this post. Mayo Clinic researchers have found that multiple exposures to anesthesia at a young age are associated with higher rates of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Children exposed to two or more anesthetics before age 3 had more than double the incidence of ADHD than children who had no exposure, says David Warner, M.D., a Mayo Clinic pediatric anesthesiologist and investigator on the study. The findings are published in the Feb. 2 edition of Mayo Clinic Proceedings. The study utilized results of an… -
“Know Your Numbers” is National Anthem of Heart Month
26 Jan 2012 | 9:17 amFriday, Feb. 3 is National Wear Red Day®, the kickoff for February Heart Month, when Americans raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women. Consider the facts: 80 million Americans – about 1 in 3 adults – have some form of heart disease. Every day, 2,200 Americans die of heart disease – an average of one death every 39 seconds. Heart disease kills nearly five times as many women as does breast cancer. Mayo Clinic has developed an unofficial national anthem for Heart Month that brings home the message in a fun and memorable way. The music video already has more… -

La magie a opéré pour près de 900 personnes qui s’étaient donné rendez-vous au Centre Bell pour célébrer la fête de Noël. Val is a market researcher and mom of 2 kids – one boy and one girl. She is one of the most genuine people I know and she can rally a group of total strangers into a productive ideation session by using some of the best ice-breakers known to the corporate world. How does she do it?! What’s your work schedule? On a ‘regular’ week I work in a corporate office, Monday through Friday. How do you handle child care? Our kids… -

Ready for my second pregnancy?
3 Feb 2012 | 2:42 pmRewind 8 months… We were in the thick of summer in Atlanta and I was 8 months pregnant with my first child. I was hot, tired, cranky and most noticeably, swollen. My body apparently had enough as well because I developed a hive-like rash on my skin (formally known as PUPPPs). I wore gloves on my hands at night to keep from scratching and only gained a minimal level of comfort from ice cold showers. I was reduced to flip flops (feet were too swollen for my regular shoes) and I could only bear to sit in the same place, position for an hour at a time. In the final weeks, I selfishly cried and… -
Know Before You Register: Two Playard Facts
31 Jan 2012 | 4:07 pmAs the brand manager on playards, I get to listen to a lot of moms shop for their ideal playard and there are a few questions and misconceptions that seemingly always come up. Here are a few tidbits about playards so that you are armed with the facts before registering. #1 Does the upper level (aka the bassinet) go down to make it a full-size playard? Yes. On virtually every playard available in the market today. Here is a picture of a Graco playard in ‘bassinet mode’ and next to it is the same product in ‘playard mode’. State capitalism
1 Feb 2012 | 5:08 pmIn the January 21, 2012, issue of The Economist, the main focus of both the feature articles and the special report was on the resurgence of “state capitalism.” The magazine’s reporters described a world in which major companies in major markets were either owned directly by national governments, or subject to control or heavy influence, even if they were privately owned or had issued shares to the public. The stories reminded me that, for the last 21 years of my Pitney Bowes career, I dealt continuously with the encroachment of state capitalism in the postal sector. In the late… -
It’s About Learning, Not Educational Credentials
16 Jan 2012 | 6:55 amIn the January, 2012, issue of The Atlantic Monthly, there is a lengthy article on the future of American manufacturing entitled “Making it in America”. In profiling an individual company called Standard Motor Products and a few employees performing manufacturing operations, particularly a 22-year-old single parent named Maddie Parlier, reporter Adam Davidson concludes that the company will continue to perform manufacturing operations in the United States, but it will do so only if it can continually compare the cost of employees versus automated technology, and extract the best… -
Reflections at the Beginning of the New Year
1 Jan 2012 | 8:31 amOn December 31, 2011, I watched a Connecticut Public TV special called From Hitler to Hollywood. It caught my attention because it profiled the process by which the German and Central European film industry was built between the end of World War I and 1933, dismantled by Hitler because a significant part of the film industry participants were Jewish, and then recreated in Hollywood between 1933 and 1945. There were several noteworthy insights from the program: The German and Central European film-makers were incredibly innovative, and they sparked the development of many features of American… -
Why toll collectors and other jobs like them will disappear
18 Dec 2011 | 7:26 amI love the New York Post headlines. One of my favorites was in the Sunday, December 11, 2011, issue. The headline was “E-Z CASH: Change he can believe in: Toll collector makes $100K.” On page 5, the story to which headline refers is entitled “High-Pay PA Crew Taking Their Toll.” It describes what we have learned is an all-too-common rip-off of taxpayers, the use of what is called “pension spiking” to give people making a certain level of income the chance to get an even larger pension by awarding them a huge amount of overtime pay opportunity in their last year of… -
Making the U.S. Postal Service Economically Viable
6 Dec 2011 | 9:23 amThere have many articles recently in which the U.S. Postal Service has announced that a deterioration of first-class service is an inevitable result of the cost reductions it will have to undertake. This is unfortunate, because we need a viable Postal System to perform many vital societal functions. UPS and FedEx do a great job as for-profit institutions serving the needs of businesses and high-density residential areas, but they are far too expensive in serving lower density geographies. Moreover, their fee structures would kill individuals and small businesses. For example, UPS and…

HOT in Coastal Kenya with Aga Khan Foundation

I first visited them in 2003 and we’ve been working with them consistently since 2007 to provide clean drinking water. This Aga Khan Foundation’s development effort reaches deep into the rural areas of the Kalifi and Kwale Districts of coastal Kenya not far from Mombasa. Today is hot. 12 Jan 2012 | 11:57 amToday I’m in a familiar place in Siaya District near Kisumu Kenya. Providing the 4th Billionth liter of Clean Water with CSDW in Thailand
19 Dec 2011 | 9:03 amIt’s very hard for me to believe that today we’re providing the 4 billionth liter of clean drinking water through the P&G Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program. It seems like only yesterday that we began this journey. But in reality, it started 10 years ago. For three years, P&G provide the water purification packets as a for-profit effort and we provided a total of 30 million liters of clean water. In 2004, in order to expand the effort, we created the not-for-profit P&G CSDW Program as a signature program of P&G’s pro-social investments and we’ve… -

‘Exergames’ Can Improve Cognitive Function in Older Adults
26 Jan 2012 | 2:35 pmWe all hear about the benefits of physical activity beyond weight management. According to the Centers for Disease Control, exercise helps to improve your ability to do daily activities, mental health and mood. This is especially important later in life to improve cognitive function protecting against the onset of dementia. However, as the CDC estimates, only 14 percent of adults aged 65 to 74 years and 7 percent of those over 75 years exercise regularly. Shorter Antibiotic Regimens Might Counter Antibiotic Resistance

Extending the Cure researchers published an analysis this week that questions the conventional wisdom regarding antibiotic dosing practices and suggests rethinking the guidelines to minimize the growing public health crisis posed by antibiotic resistance. Ramanan Laxminarayan, director of Extending the Cure, and his colleagues, used mathematical models to study antibiotic treatment guidelines, the… -

How can I get in touch with the @RogersHelps team? Easy. Just tweet your question to @RogersHelps. Make sure you don’t tweet @Rogers – that’s a nice guy named Glenn but he probably can’t help you. -

7 Feb 2012 | 5:32 pmThis is fifth and final installment of the blog series that discusses “Is Your Infrastructure Ready for Smart Metering?” You can view parts one, two, three and four here. As I told my leadership, I could write a book on what I have gathered in my journeys evaluating and being a part of implementing smart grid technology and doing technical assessments. I feel and you would agree that although this information in insightful, it goes an inch deep and a mile wide. So what I would like to wrap up with are a couple of thoughts that will start moving your strategy and… -
Cyberthreats Recognized by FBI
7 Feb 2012 | 1:50 pmOn January 31st FBI Director Robert Mueller and National Intelligence Director James Clapper noted in a US Senate hearing that cyber threats – such as cyber-espionage, computer crime and attacks on critical infrastructure – will surpass terrorism as the number one threat facing the US. Sadly, this may not really be “news” for those of us who have been closely following cyber crime, cyber espionage, and cyber warfare these past 10 years. For instance, this past week there was an announcement about Chinese-backed attackers breaching security at seven different law firms… -
Future of Work – What’s Your Work Style – What is the Future of Work?
6 Feb 2012 | 5:00 pmNo question, the whole world of work in a traditional sense has changed, but where is it going? “You have no idea how you'd get any work done on business trips if you didn't have a laptop. You can't remember quite how you lived without your BlackBerry. Your cell phone might as well be surgically attached to your ear, it's so crucial to your job. Then there's the Internet. It's hard to conceive of getting through the day without Google …— or, if you're under 40, text messaging or even joining Facebook to stay in touch with your extended network of colleagues. In just a… -

So you already have an IT department that manages your entire critical infrastructure for generation, transmission, distribution, operations, customers, service providers and operations. Hunger Relief Twitterers
7 Feb 2012 | 3:46 pmWe created this blog in 2007, with the goal of raising awareness of the issue of hunger and supporting the community of people and organizations involved in hunger relief. Early on I was excited about the potential of social media tools bringing the hunger community together. In early 2008, I created a list of those in the hunger community using Twitter. It had about twenty accounts. It’s grown a bit since then–see below. Go follow these folks. If you’re interested in having your name attached, message me on Twitter @TysonFoods. disclaimer–while I do try… -
Stamping out misinformation about SNAP
6 Feb 2012 | 9:06 amLast week I wrote a post asking whether we were playing effective defense in our advocacy of SNAP, specifically when it applied to criticism of fraud and abuse in the system, and claims government safety net programs create dependency. One prominent hunger relief advocate, for whom I have an enormous amount of respect, replied that responding directly to the claim that government programs promote dependency is like answering the question, “When did you stop beating your wife.” I might respectfully disasgree. I believe there are just too many people whose opinions matter, who… -
SNAP–The Political Football Game
3 Feb 2012 | 11:45 amI’m not a big fan of using sports as a metaphor for life’s challenges. But since we’re coming up on the biggest U.S. sporting event of the year this weekend, please allow me to bow to the convention. Thanks to certain candidates, SNAP (formerly food stamps) has become a political football in the ongoing presidential primary. It shouldn’t be. There have been some very well-articulated editorials defending the program, critical of those who politicize it. FRAC recently released results of a poll indicating broad support of SNAP, transcending party lines. -

Lieutenant Colonel James A. Walker
6 Feb 2012 | 11:30 amWells Fargo is very proud that former team members were part of the (again-) famous Tuskegee Airmen. We have blogged about this several times. With the release of Red Tails a couple weeks ago, I told of our search within the Company for other team members with ties to these fliers, and shared a couple. We have long known of Lieutenant Colonel James A. Walker who, like George Roberts, joined Wells Fargo when his military career ended. James Walker was a Personal Banking Officer in Hayward, Calif., from 1965-1979. We corresponded with Walker himself several years ago—with Red Tails… -
Don Cornelius, 1936-2012
2 Feb 2012 | 1:30 pmI read that Don Cornelius died the other day. Cornelius gave us "Soul Train" ("The Hippest Trip in America"), the every-Saturday TV show that brought the latest and greatest in pop culture from 1970 to 2006. Cornelius was close to Civil Rights figures in the 1960s, brought "Soul Train" to our homes (was host until 1993), and went from media entrepreneur to entertainment giant. And man, he was cool. "Soul Train" was more than a music show. It was about clothes, style, personality ... and dancing. Anybody on that show was not just a dancer, but a dancer. Everyone who watched it will tell you… -
Citizenship
27 Jan 2012 | 6:59 pmOne Saturday last fall, my son finished his soccer game with complaints—how the other team played unfairly, how some members of his team didn't try enough, how only he could have won the game. This prompted a discussion on citizenship and how being a good citizen is more than just self interest. Citizenship is leading by example, seeing opportunities for collective improvement, and acting on those opportunities. Being a good citizen has also been an important aspect of banking since its infancy. Banks are in a trusted position, between borrowers and savers. Banks have the responsibility… -

Happy Lunar New Year!
23 Jan 2012 | 3:40 pmThis time of year always means one thing to me: Feasting on delicious food with family and friends. My father grew up in the Chinese neighborhoods of St. Louis, Mo., working in his father's restaurant. I grew up having Chinese New Year dinner at my uncle's restaurant, with all of my aunts and uncles and cousins. There were dozens of people, and dozens of platters full of the most wonderful food. This year, our group will be smaller, just my family and my parents and a friend. We've already looked up the recipes that we want to cook, and begun our grocery shopping. On Saturday, we'll go to…

True Innovation Meets Today’s Business Challenges Head On
6 Feb 2012 | 11:00 amBy, Sophie Vandebroek, Xerox Chief Technology Officer and president, Xerox Innovation Group We recently released our annual patent tally. Xerox received 1,030 U.S. patents in 2011 which include patents from Xerox wholly-owned subsidiaries such as PARC, ACS and XMPie. If we were to add the 588 U.S. patents generated by our partner in Japan, Fuji Xerox, the total would be 1,618 U.S. patents. This means that we receive over 30 patents each week and it places Xerox eighth on the IFI Patent Intelligence list worldwide. Wow! As impressive as these numbers are, as president of the Xerox… -
FocusFriday: Keep on the Rose-Colored Glasses
3 Feb 2012 | 10:30 amby, Jennifer Wasmer, Head of International Communications, Xerox Corporation In response to an upbeat comment I recently made, a Xerox colleague told me I must be wearing rose-colored glasses. “As usual,” I replied. Based on a couple of articles on the Harvard Business Review web site, it appears that my positive attitude does more than put a smile on my face and that of others. It also helps me to focus. As any 21st century knowledge worker knows, our busy and beautiful brains are often distracted by a constant flood of email, meetings, posts and Tweets – not to mention picking up the… -
Super Parking in the Super Bowl City
1 Feb 2012 | 11:00 amBy, David Cummins, vice president parking solutions, Xerox Corporation Anybody who has ever been to Indy knows it’s a super city. They didn’t need the NFL to validate that. Even with Peyton Manning hurt and the Indianapolis Colts are having a disappointing year, the eyes of the world will still be on The Circle City as they host Super Bowl XLVI (that’s forty-six for you non-Roman numeral counting experts). More than 100 million people will watch the big game on February 5th, that’s about one third of the US population. The game will be broadcast out to 225 countries around the world. -

31 Jan 2012 | 11:00 amBy Ken Stephens, Xerox Cloud Services If you’re responsible for IT at your small or mid-sized business, you’re familiar with cloud computing. You’ve probably heard all the hype – that it has the potential to save your organization money, reduce the amount of time you need to spend on IT management, and ultimately enable you and your staff to focus less on operations and more on activities that generate revenue for your business. Here’s a good blog from SBA.gov that summarizes all of that. But what may not be as clear to you is how to go about using the cloud in your business. -
2012: The Year of Re-humanizing Technology?
30 Jan 2012 | 8:00 amBy Sheila Mackay, Xerox Litigation Services In a world that’s becoming more and more tech-dependent, it’s sometimes easy to lose sight of the invaluable human element. And there’s no better example than in electronic discovery, where often the best solution is one that merges the benefits of technology with human expertise. In e-discovery, automated document classification solutions (often referred to as technology-assisted review) like XLS’ CategoriX are a prime example. Earlier this winter, we joined forces with Ben Kerschberg, a Forbes.com contributor, to shed some light on a…
