This article describes how two synchronized DDS channels can implement a zero-crossing FSK or PSK modulator. In phase-coherent radar systems, zero-crossing switching reduces the amount of post processing needed for target signature recognition; and zero-crossing switching reduces PSK spectral splatter. Here, the AD9958 two-channel complete DDS is used to switch at the zero crossing.

One of the things I really enjoy about working in the archives is when we have new items to catalog - here is a painting that Ted just acquired. I did some research on the artist, Lawrence Wilbur and found out that he studied under N.C Wyeth, another artist who produced Coca-Cola images.  It may be hard to tell that some of the brush strokes are thick but you can see the colors are very vivid.  I wonder if that little girl is asking to pet the horse or for a sip of the Coca-Cola?

The "Coke Adds Life" slogan came out in 1976, so this promotional, self-described "instant camera" is from the late 1970s. Well, I guess now we'll try the hand crank on the camera and see if the picture develops within a day or two! I won't hold my breath. Thank you, technology.

  • “Quo Vadis Anthropogenic CO2?” Part 3: Uses of CO2

    Konrad Eichhorn Colombo
    23 Jan 2012 | 1:00 pm
So far I have discussed the problems that CO2 can pose and methods at hand to capture CO2 emissions.  The next question is, what are the potential applications of the CO2 after it has been captured? Well, in the oil industry for instance, CO2 represents a desirable product. Instead of ‘simply’ storing the CO2 underground, it could be used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). In simple terms, EOR refers to a number of technologies that allow increased recovery of oil in depleted or high viscosity oil fields. EOR is also sometimes referred to as tertiary oil recovery because it usually…
  • Stump the Scientist: Static electricity

    Stump the Scientist
    20 Jan 2012 | 2:56 pm
As always, thanks for submitting your Stump the Scientist questions!  We appreciate everybody playing along with us!  We’ve finally got some cold weather in Upstate New York so today’s question that came in from Facebook is especially fitting… Question from Facebook fan Jason Burdorff: Why is there more static electricity when there is cold weather? (or at least, why is it more noticeable?) Response from Chief Scientist Jim Bray: Static electricity refers to the separation of positive electrical charge (from the protons in atomic nuclei) from the negative electrical…

  • Tell Intel How Shopping Should Be Smarter

    Eric Mantion
    27 Jan 2012 | 7:50 pm
I’m sure we’ve all heard the expression: “a have 2 ears and 1 mouth because we should listen twice as much as we speak.” While that sounds good in concept, it is sometimes hard to do, especially when writing a blog, but that is what I would like to try to do today. The topic du Jour is: Smart Shopping. Specifically, using things like interactive kiosks, cameras, touch screens, and even gesture recognition to improve your shopping experience. And like any good toolbox, the more of the aforementioned tools we use, the more impressive the final solution could be. Let me…
  • President Obama Visits Intel: Fabulous Time at Fab 42

    Eva Levin
    26 Jan 2012 | 7:21 am
I’m checking this one off the bucket list, the opportunity to see a President speak live. The President spoke at the Intel Ocotillo campus and touted Intel as a leader of innovation, the future of manufacturing and supporter of education Obama             It was amazing to watch and witness the day unfolded. I was there early around noon. First the magnitude of security and local support from the police department and fire station, the community came together to provide a beautiful and safe backdrop to President Obama’s visit. Secret Service men and women…

    24 Jan 2012 | 7:21 pm
As a fan of Instagram for quite some time, I am always excited when public figures embrace the iPhone application that launched in October of 2010.  So as you could imagine, I was quite excited to hear earlier this month that President Barack Obama (well really the Obama 2012 campaign staff) created an account.  But what I found most interesting is that Instagram co-founder Mike Krieger will be present at tonight’s State of the Union.  Like others, I’m suspecting to hear a bit about technology from our President tonight and I look forward to it!  So if you are not familiar…

Did you make any New Year’s Resolutions this year? Along with spending more time with my loved ones and investing more in my health, I’d love to also find more time in my days. Intel’s Asia Pacific Regional PR Manager Paul McKeon recently wrote the entry below with some interesting information focused on how much time we spend waiting for our PCs, and then he offers a solution that could save you time equivalent to half a work day! If your New Year’s Resolution is to spend less time waiting for your PC, Intel has good news for you. Today marks the beginning of the Lunar New Year.

  • Mashed Black Beans

    Maring
    13 Jan 2012 | 2:07 pm
These are just great. Try them over Mexican Rice. Of course, making your own black beans is cheaper but using beans like Eden Organic No Salt Added beans is quick and easy. These beans only have 15 mg of sodium per serving (1/2 cup). A whole can of 3.5 servings has about 50 mg. Black beans also provide a lot of fiber and you know we all need more fiber. Cost? Reasonable, particularly in bulk but still cheaper to make your own. Remembering Mark Bittman’s article in the NY Times — about $28 to feed a family of four at a major fast food chain and $9 to feed a family of four with…
  • Mexican Brown Rice (or any kind of rice)

    Maring
    12 Jan 2012 | 6:28 pm
Cooking rice has been a journey for me unlike probably billions of people around the world. I really like this new way I tried (new to me). The pureed onion and garlic suffuse the rice with flavor as opposed to just being chunks in in the rice. You can adjust the amounts to your taste. And cooking it with parsley and a whole jalapeno provides pklenty of flavor and spice. This was great with some mashed black beans (recipe to follow another day). Mexican Brown Rice Serves four 1/2 white onion, chunked. (you could use, I suppose, yellow onion, red onion, or shallots) 1-4 cloves garlic 4 cups…
  • Vegetables with Scrambled Eggs

    30 Dec 2011 | 12:06 pm
Ultimately it’s ratios that matter. Plates past often featured a huge slab of something done medium rare, a little something white and mashed and maybe a touch of green. While tasty, this kind of meal may not be the best combination of food for long term health. Today’s plates often have a 3 ounce portion of the meat, chicken, or fish (some say about the size of a deck of cards) and lots of vegetables and whole grains of many colors. Same with scrambled eggs. Adding vegetables used to mean adding a sprinkling of freshly snipped chives. I’ve found that a weekend breakfast can…

Saeng Sivanthong has created beauty on my hospital campus as a landscaper for many, many years. Eddie Daniels welcomes patients as a receptionist in our Spine Surgery offices with the best smile ever. Selene Corona treats every women she helps as a medical assistant in our OB-GYN offices with respect and caring. • Potato, Delicata Squash, and Arugula Salad (Entree)

    Maring
    19 Nov 2011 | 9:00 pm
This dish was just great for a meatless Monday. It is definitely robust enough to serve as a main course. I don’t know if the potatoes have to be exactly those described, but if you can find some small, skinny ones, that is probably best. The delicata squash is delicate (duh) and doesn’t need to be peeled. I think using this squash matters for the texture of this recipe. The amounts of ingredients listed can be varied. Potato, Delicata Squash and Arugula Salad Serves four 1 1/2 pound Russian fingerling potatoes, cut lengthwise into 1/8″ slices 2 delicata squash, halved…

  • “Know Your Numbers” is National Anthem of Heart Month

    Lee Aase
    26 Jan 2012 | 9:17 am
Friday, Feb. 3 is National Wear Red Day®, the kickoff for February Heart Month, when Americans raise awareness of heart disease as the number one killer of women. Consider the facts: 80 million Americans – about 1 in 3 adults – have some form of heart disease. Every day, 2,200 Americans die of heart disease – an average of one death every 39 seconds. Heart disease kills nearly five times as many women as does breast cancer. Mayo Clinic has developed an unofficial national anthem for Heart Month that brings home the message in a fun and memorable way. The music video already has more…

Graco is excited to announce our newest double stroller, the Ready2Grow stand and ride stroller. Most people are probably more familiar with Graco’s tandem double strollers (DuoGlider, Quattro Tour Duo), which are the ones that the two kids sit back to back. What is so exciting about this double stroller is that it provides 12 riding options for your kids (yup, I said 12). You can still snap in two Graco infant car seats into this double stroller but there are also so many other seating configurations to choose from. Your older child can sit on the bench seat or stand on the platform,…

I always forget not only how much energy little boys have, but how early the energy starts to exude itself.  In a recent trip to New York to visit my half-brothers, I found myself awake at 5:30am being dragged out of bed to play Star Wars. I pushed the sleep from my eyes, downed a cup of coffee and set-out to spend “quality” time with the little ones that I never get to see. I was surprised at how quickly being 5 years old came back to me. Soon we were making up all sorts of games, and rules and safe zones. Then we had the brilliant idea of creating a barrier wall and a…

On December 31, 2011, I watched a Connecticut Public TV special called From Hitler to Hollywood. It caught my attention because it profiled the process by which the German and Central European film industry was built between the end of World War I and 1933, dismantled by Hitler because a significant part of the film industry participants were Jewish, and then recreated in Hollywood between 1933 and 1945. There were several noteworthy insights from the program: The German and Central European film-makers were incredibly innovative, and they sparked the development of many features of American…

I love the New York Post headlines.  One of my favorites was in the Sunday, December 11, 2011, issue.  The headline was “E-Z CASH: Change he can believe in: Toll collector makes $100K.” On page 5, the story to which headline refers is entitled “High-Pay PA Crew Taking Their Toll.”  It describes what we have learned is an all-too-common rip-off of taxpayers, the use of what is called “pension spiking” to give people making a certain level of income the chance to get an even larger pension by awarding them a huge amount of overtime pay opportunity in their last year of…

There have many articles recently in which the U.S. Postal Service has announced that a deterioration of first-class service is an inevitable result of the cost reductions it will have to undertake.  This is unfortunate, because we need a viable Postal System to perform many vital societal functions.  UPS and FedEx do a great job as for-profit institutions serving the needs of businesses and high-density residential areas, but they are far too expensive in serving lower density geographies. Moreover, their fee structures would kill individuals and small businesses.  For example, UPS and…
  • Should Taxes be Raised on Wealthy People?

    Mike Critelli
    15 Nov 2011 | 7:31 am
Not surprisingly, there has been a great deal of debate about raising personal income taxes on people who earn more than $250,000 per year.  The support and opposition have broken on political party lines. As a person who clearly would be subject to higher tax rates, were a tax reform law to pass, I wanted to weigh in on this subject. I do not believe we can solve the deficit problem without raising taxes.  I also do not think that all tax increases on wealthier people are inherently bad.  I do not think the proposed tax rates are inherently bad relative to their effect on economic…

    26 Jan 2012 | 2:35 pm
We all hear about the benefits of physical activity beyond weight management. According to the Centers for Disease Control, exercise helps to improve your ability to do daily activities, mental health and mood. This is especially important later in life to improve cognitive function protecting against the onset of dementia. However, as the CDC estimates, only 14 percent of adults aged 65 to 74 years and 7 percent of those over 75 years exercise regularly. Health Games Research grantee Dr. Cay Anderson-Hanley and her fellow researchers from the Healthy Aging and Neuropsychology Lab at Union…

    12 Jan 2012 | 9:05 am
Antibiotics on the shelf today are increasingly losing their potency against resistant microbes or “superbugs” like the potentially lethal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA. Extending the Cure researchers published an analysis this week that questions the conventional wisdom regarding antibiotic dosing practices and suggests rethinking the guidelines to minimize the growing public health crisis posed by antibiotic resistance. Ramanan Laxminarayan, director of Extending the Cure, and his colleagues, used mathematical models to study antibiotic treatment guidelines, the…

Will patients be more likely to seek a second or third opinion? New York Times Will reading your doctor's notes lead to better health? USA Today Can Patients Handle the Truth? TIME These questions and others were posed following the release of OpenNotes’ findings about patient and doctor attitudes toward opening doctors’ medical notes to patients. The survey of nearly 38,000 patients and 173 primary care physicians revealed patients were enthusiastic about the prospect of reading their doctors’ notes while doctors were cautious. Patients who signed up for the project,…

BY PATRICIA FLATLEY BRENNAN, PHD, RN, Project Health Design National Program Director Since health reform passed almost two years ago, we’ve seen the health care system begin to change quite a bit. Because Project HealthDesign has always included multi-disciplinary teams of researchers, clinicians, and patients who are helping to lay the foundation for a patient-centered health IT system, we’ve seized these…
  • OpenNotes: Mind the Gap

    Steve Downs
    4 Jan 2012 | 9:00 am
Last week, I contributed to The Health Care Blog about OpenNotes, a Pioneer grantee that is enabling patients to view the notes their doctors write after a medical visit. I wrote that it is a simple idea – but also a dangerous one. OpenNotes recently completed a pre-survey published in the Annals of Internal Medicine that asked doctors and patients about their expectations of how the idea would play out in real life. What they found is fascinating. Doctors and patients are clearly divided. On a wide range of possible benefits, doctors are more skeptical than patients. But what really jumps…

  • Moving Securely into Cloud and Mobility While Still Maintaining Privacy…Is It Possible?

    27 Jan 2012 | 9:03 am
First, the not-so-good news: cloud and mobility have the potential to exacerbate data privacy concerns. And, now for the good news: there are clear ways to embrace both cloud and mobility while effectively addressing privacy concerns. With Data Privacy Day falling tomorrow (Jan. 28), the world’s eyes are focused on how to improve privacy and embrace data-privacy best practices. Data privacy is only an issue when two components are in place: 1) the existence of valuable data (to a person or business) and 2) the possibility that an undesirable person may access (and misuse) the data.
  • DistribuTECH - Smart Grid and SCADA: They Both Need Security

    25 Jan 2012 | 10:36 am
After perusing the online version of the DistribuTECH 2012 program, I was pleased to see that the topic of security was the subject of many panel discussions.  This is great news since it shows that the industry – especially those focused on the smart grid and smart meters – are really paying attention to security of these systems.  Well done! I was also pleased to see that SCADA – aka Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition – was even raised as a topic of at least four panels.  What was also good to see was that Smart Water Meter SCADA and security was…

    24 Jan 2012 | 3:49 pm
As DistribuTECH gets underway this year in San Antonio, the focus will be on the lower voltage systems all our homes and businesses rely upon.  These systems are really important to all of us in order to move the higher voltage power from generating plants so it can be used to keep the lights on, run our refrigerators, and run our computing systems. Just last week I learned about the importance of these systems when a combined snow, ice and wind storm hit the Seattle area and knocked out power to my neighborhood for 56 hours.  But, another thing has run through my brain cells as I…
